Know Media Youth
Project:
The Know Media Youth Project was born out of a shared vision of a
Brattleboro Union High School senior and an adult member of Know Media to
get youth more involved and informed around media literacy and activism.
After giving a multi media presentation to over 200 students in the fall
of 2001, the first organizational meeting was held and an after school
club was formed. Meetings were held at the school weekly from that day
forward. Throughout the years, the group was involved in a variety of
projects that included:
- “Media Rebellution”
events held in the community
- “Guerilla sticker
campaign” in the waiting rooms of local businesses to encourage
patrons to
question ads they were seeing in magazines
- Dialogue night held
with parents and youth at the high school
- Presentation on how
youth are marketing targets at a local youth activism
conference
- Video discussions with
other students presentations to middle school
- Students creation of
“TheWall” at the school
Below are some pictures and
information about some of these projects.
"The Wall"

Members of the KMYP created an information wall at their high
school that served a number of purposes. First, it was created to provoke
curiosity and questions about how the media influence our lives. Their
were numerous images side by side with open-ended questions to ponder
thought. The wall also had factual data and information in regards to such
things as advertising budgets, smoking in the movies, and body image
issues. Finally, it was a means to promote the group and spread the word
within the school about getting involved.
“Media Rebellution”

Undoubtedly, the project that created the most excitement and required the
most energy were the two “Media Rebellution” events held in the fall of
2002 and 2003. This was an event open to anyone in the community, with a
special focus on youth, to come and participate in exploring and
expressing how the media influence our lives on a personal, cultural and
global level. The evening included live performances, an interactive
graffiti wall, creative distribution of information, raffles, food. Each
year also featured a short video that KMYP members created interviewing
individuals on the streets of Brattleboro about their thoughts on the
subject.
Creating Media at RFB

Martin (Zappala) and Morgan (Ingalls)
host a talk and music program at radio
free brattleboro. KMYP utilizes a wide array of multimedia, including
radio broadcasting, to critique advertising aimed at youth and young
adults, including tobacco marketing, and offer positive alternatives to
the corporate media.
